Odeon cinemas in the UK, Irish Republic and Italy will not be screening Tim Burton’s new film version of Alice In Wonderland, the cinema chain says.

The Disney Studios plans to reduce the period in which it can be shown only in cinemas from the standard 17 weeks. Disney wishes to release the film on DVD at the end of May, just 12 weeks after the release date. Odeon said Disney would “set a new benchmark, leading to a 12-week window becoming rapidly standard. They have refused to release the new film because they will make less money. Odeon’s decision will not affect the film premiere on Thursday, which will coincidentally take place at the Odeon Leicester Square in Central London on Thursday 25th February.

The 3D film stars Johnny Depp and will be shown in cinemas from March 5, 2010. It is based on the children’s book by Lewis Carroll.
