It is well known fact that many people illegally download music from the internet. According to a report by the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) 95% of music downloaded on the internet in 2008 and 2009 was illegal. However many people don’t know the risks. If you download music off an illegal website; such as Limewire or YouTube one can get fined up to $250,000 or up to three years in prison for infringement of copyright music. If there is a repeated offence one could earn up to 6 years in jail.
But how likely is it that you would get caught? According to personal statistics, the chance of getting caught, downloading illegal music is approximately 1 in 6,000,000,000 (6bil.). It is also primarily believed, by those who download music illegally and are aware of the risks, that the police force have lager issues to deal with, therefore the risks of being fined or sent to prison are assumed less.
Statistics show that over half of teenage girls have downloaded music illegally in the past; 33% of them revealing that a significant proportion of their music was illegally downloaded. Five out of every nine girls asked said they used Limewire to get their free music.Artists such as Shakira, P.Diddy, Missy Elliot and Dixie Chicks all agree that the downloading of illegal music is unfair considering the effort they put into creating music for their fans.
